Bais Din Neve Tzedek

Obtaining a Gett

Jewish Document of Divorce
Obtaining a Gett

What is needed?

Generally, both husband and wife must both be in agreement
to arrange for the Gett. The couple needs to be living separately.

Obtaining a Gett

What is not needed?

A Gett may be performed before the civil divorce or final court orders are issued, and this is often the case. Indeed, the Gett is not connected to any determination of fault or financial agreement, nor does the Bais Din need determine the grounds for divorce.

To arrange for a Gett you can fill out the form below or call Rabbi Steinberg at the number below. You will have the opportunity to hear about the process and timing, and ask any questions you may have. You’ll be asked some basic questions, most notably about your names. You’ll be asked to produce your Kesubah (if available) and civil documentation of the marriage.

Scheduling

At Your Convenience

The Gett will be scheduled at a time convenient for you.

Bear in mind that both husband and wife must appear before the Bais Din in person. However, the Bais Din can accommodate requests for the husband and wife to appear separately. In addition, if one of the parties lives in another state where a Bais Din can be arranged locally, we can often times arrange for the Gett in such way that travel to Denver is not necessary.

The Process

What to expect

After the husband makes several declarations of intent and authorizations, the writing of the Gett begins. This is done with a quill and ink, much like a Torah is written. The writing takes about 45-55 minutes. The authorized witnesses then sign the Gett, also with the quill, and then the Gett is prepared for delivery. After a short declaration of the husband to the wife, he hands it to her and the divorce is complete.

The Bais Din creates Documents of Divorce (Piturin), one for each party. This is the document that you will retain to certify your Gett, whether before a civil court, Bais Din, Interior Office in Israel (Misrad HaPnim) or to an officiating Rabbi should you choose to marry.

The total duration of the procedure is about 90 minutes.

The inclusive fee for the Gett is $850. An additional fee may assessed if a second convening of the Bais Din is needed.
